Houston Area Traditional Dance Society

All public HATDS in-person events remain suspended.

Code of Conduct

HATDS has published a formalized Code of Conduct in order to document our expectations that our dances are welcoming events where everyone can feel comfortable. The Code of Conduct is not intended to impose new requirements on attendees, nor is it in response to any problems that have occurred.

The Code of Conduct is modeled on codes adopted by various affiliates of the Texas International Folk Dancers, of which we are also an affiliate. Accompanying the Code of Conduct is a series of processes and procedures for responding to complaints. This will ensure that we are prepared to act, and that we treat everyone fairly.

There are several individuals available to respond to issues, called the Safety Team, who will be identified at dances by a special name badge. You can also contact a board member or email safety@hatds.org.

A summary of the Code of Conduct will be at the sign-in table at each dance; it is also reproduced below. Copies of the full Code of Conduct will also be available at every dance, and a PDF version can be downloaded here. Finally, the Code of Conduct will be emailed annually to those who receive our regular emails.

Summary of the Code of Conduct

To ensure that everyone at Houston Area Traditional Dance Society events enjoys a safe and comfortable environment, free from discrimination or inappropriate behavior, we expect all participants to adhere to the Code of Conduct.

Refrain from These Behaviors

  • Offensive or inappropriate verbal comments
  • Inappropriate physical contact
  • Unwelcome sexual attention
  • Intimidation, stalking, or following
  • Probing/prying questions about an individual’s personal life or habits
  • Display of offensive images
  • Objectionable photography or video recording
  • Sustained or repeated disruption of an HATDS event

Your Compliance

By attending an HATDS event, you agree to the Code of Conduct. Failure to comply could result in your being counseled, warned, or expelled from the event with no refund.

What Can You Do?

See something? Say something.

If you notice someone behaving inappropriately, or if you have any other concerns, contact a HATDS Safety Team member, Board member, or any dance organizer during the event, or email safety@hatds.org.

The complete, official Code of Conduct is available at the dances. A PDF copy can be downloaded from the first link below.

While I dance I cannot judge, I cannot hate, I cannot separate myself from life. I can only be joyful and whole. That is why I dance. ~ Hans Bos
