Houston Area Traditional Dance Society

Come Dance with Us!

We are the Houston Area Traditional Dance Society, an all-volunteer organization that sponsors contra and English Country dancing in the Houston, Texas metro area.

At the dance

Contra dances are held on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays, and English Country dances are held on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays, of most months. See the Event Calendar for details.

We also sponsor a community band, called Contra Dan's, for musicians who would like to play for dances.

This page features items of special note. Use the Menu in the upper right corner and the links below each article to navigate the rest of our site.

Special Dances

There will be three English Country dances in the Heights in November, on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Thursdays. The dances on November 1 and 15 are regular dances open to all. The dance on the 29th is for those who already have experience with ECD.

Austin / San Marcos Mini Dance Weekend

Austin Mini Dance WeekendAustin and San Marcos are holding a mini dance weekend on November 17 and 18. Austin will host an English Country dance Saturday afternoon and a contra dance that evening. Then San Marcos will hold their monthly contra dance Sunday afternoon.

What makes this weekend unusually interesting to Houston dancers is that all of the callers and all but one of the musicians are from Houston.

See the flier (linked below and to the right) for details.

Holiday Ball

The Holiday Ball will be December 8. It will be the only HATDS-sponsored contradance in December and the last contradance held at St. Andrews.

Bayou Bedlam 2019

Bayou BedlamBayou Bedlam is Houston's weekend contradance festival, taking place February 8-10, 2019. We're bringing Dana Parkinson and Nova to Texas for the first time. Visit bayoubedlam.org for details and online registration.

Hall Search!

St. Andrews is not renting to outside groups next year, so we need a new place by January. We have formed a Hall Search Committee. If you know of any places we should investigate, please let us know. Email board@hatds.org.

Please Lend a Hand at a Dance

Our dances don't “just happen”. Each evening of dancing requires many helping hands. Please lend yours!

We use SignUp Genius as a management tool, so we know in advance which jobs are covered and which need a volunteer. Click the button below to see what jobs are available and a short description of each. While you're there, sign up to help!
