A Testimonial

Here's what Portland dancer, organizer, and musician Sue Songer has to say about Erik:

Whenever Erik Weberg calls, the hall is packed with dancers who know the evening is sure to be a great one. Here's why: Equally adept at contra and English calling, Erik chooses dances that are tailor-made for the occasion at hand, matching the dances to experience level of the crowd and providing a wealth of variety in the program. His teaching is exceptionally encouraging, clear, and concise making it easy for all to gain a sense of mastery while keeping momentum rolling throughout the evening.

Because Erik is also an accomplished contra and English dance musician, he is unusually good at conveying the feel of the music he would like for each of the dances he calls. Band members then have a clear idea about what to play, and dancers reap the rewards when they experience a wonderful synergy between the dance figures and the music. Erik's ability to connect with dancers and his sly sense of humor insure an upbeat, congenial atmosphere on the floor as well as a terrific dance experience. This combination of attributes explains why he is in continual demand as a caller at weekend and week-long dance camps as well as a favorite on Friday and Saturday nights in his home base, Portland, Oregon.

Caller: Erik Weberg

Erik Weberg Erik teaches and leads contra and English Country dances in Portland, OR. He is also a musician, dance organizer, and dance composer. Chances are very good that you've danced Joyride, one of Erik's dances that is a favorite in Texas.

If you've never heard Erik call, we believe that you're in for a treat. Great stage presence and clarity of teaching are two of his hallmarks. We are thrilled that he is finally coming to Houston!

Here's what Erik has to say about his dance programs:

I choose dances based on simple criteria. The dances have to feel good and they have to be fun. Although I enjoy complex figures, complexity does not necessarily translate into dancing pleasure. Flow, interesting figures, and connection with the music are what make dancing sublime. Whether it's smooth like butter or driving like a freight train, it's got to make sense and feel good. Those are the dances I choose to call. I strive to teach efficiently and clearly with a playful approach and and a good sense of community cooperation.

Here is a YouTube video of Erik calling with the Portland Megaband in the Roadhouse at the Northwest Folklife Festival. If you watch much of this video you may recognize a few faces on the dance floor and in the band.
